Taco and Consuela are a matched set, two peas in a pod, and as close as close can be. We’re pretty sure that they’re mother (Consuela) and daughter (Taco) and we would never dream of separating them. These two lovely jennies were scooped up by the Circle of Friends ladies in Oklahoma when one of them saw the pair posted for a very low price on Craigslist. Unfortunately, the traders and kill buyers read those publications too, looking for a pair just like this. Then, if they aren’t sent to slaughter, the poor things often are entered into the auction merry-go-round where they are sold and resold, going from auction to auction until they’re sick and stressed, usually ending up in a bad situation. Sometimes, wonderful people do find these animals and pick them up – but we caution people all the time to never sell an animal, particularly at or below what the killers will pay, to someone you don’t know without asking for references, calling them and checking up on the animals regularly.

Consuela was suffering from a mysterious condition that caused the vet to be concerned. Blood labs showed several things “off”, but after months of different treatments for worms and anemia, she recovered and her bloodwork became normal. Taco, fortunately, was in pretty good shape. Consuela and Taco were soon ready to come to Red Bell Run and join our Longears herd. These days, Taco and Consuela are two of the most attractive donkeys at our Longears Lodge, with their beautiful rusty red coats and large dapples. They spend their days being the objects of affection of several of our donkey geldings, napping in the sun and enjoying going to the Donkey Woods during the day. They can also make some noise if their dinner is late! It’s hard to get a picture of them separately because they’re always together. They’re full of personality and we all enjoy having this delightful pair at the Sanctuary.
