We had never seen a sadder little group of refugees. Pinto Bean hadn’t seen a farrier in who knows how long and had elf feet where the hooves are left so long that they curve upward causing terrible pain. He was covered with lice and hadn’t had a decent meal in recent memory judging from his condition. The owner had decided to dump Pinto Bean and his friends Bucky and Newt. They were bought by a man who provides big cat sanctuaries with meat to feed the lions and tigers. The poor equines who are unlucky enough to be purchased for this purpose are shot and their bodies are thrown to the big cats.
We said NO!
Some kind-hearted ladies pitched in and purchased them, but they needed a place to go. Red Bell agreed to take them and began the process of getting vet care, quarantine and transport. Upon arrival, the little fellows were de-liced, received vet care and then began the process of teaching them that all people aren’t monsters and that their life was completely changed. It’s a long road that takes patience, understanding and of course, money.
Today they are happy members of the Red Bell Run herd!
Pinto Bean rules the roost at our Mini Heaven Barn. He has his feet trimmed regularly; one will always have to be monitored because the neglect causes an irregular growth pattern. Regardless, he is healthy, happy, and enjoys his days out on our Mini Track. He is a favorite with our staff and quite dominant in his little herd.
