Our Vinnie escaped from a horrible situation in our local North Carolina area where a neglectful and abusive owner led to Animal Control getting involved in getting Vinnie and his herd mates to safety. He has been a resident with us at Red Bell Run for many years now. When he first arrived, he was introduced to our other donkeys at the Longears Lodge. In nearly 100% of cases, donkeys do best with their own kind. We always recommend that if you’re getting a donkey, it’s always best to get two. They can live with a horse companion, but they are much happier with another donkey…except for Vinnie. Vinnie did not like the other donkeys; in fact, Vinnie dug a hole halfway to China next to the fence, pinned his ears, and bared his teeth if any of the other curious donkeys got close. He made it very clear that he was not pleased with his new accommodations. We try to do the very best for each equine in our care and clearly Vinnie wasn’t a happy donkey. He has fit in well at our Villa Roja barn where he is close friends with a small herd of horses! 

Vinnie is a staff favorite here at Red Bell Run. He loves cuddles and ear scratches. When volunteers are helping at his barn, he has no shame begging for attention and treats. Apples and carrots are his favorite, but his enrichment hay ball is also a well beloved item to Vinnie. It’s hard not to love this opinionated boy!
